China has now moved beyond trial voyages and started regular container shipping through the Arctic during the 2026 summer season. South Korea has also completed a trial voyage, while India is preparing its first pilot vessel through the Northern Sea Route in 2027. From Trial Voyages to Regular Shipping

The Northern Sea Route (NSR), which runs along Russia’s northern coastline, has traditionally been viewed as a long-term possibility for global shipping.

That is beginning to change.

China has started regular seasonal container services on the route, with scheduled sailings between China and Europe. The route can offer transit times of around 20–22 days under suitable conditions, potentially making it faster than some traditional Asia-Europe routes.

This shift from individual trial voyages to scheduled services is an important step toward testing the route’s commercial viability.

Why the Arctic Route Matters?

The emergence of the Arctic corridor comes at a time when traditional shipping routes are facing geopolitical risks, congestion and operational disruptions.

For global businesses, an additional Asia-Europe route could provide:

This means businesses will need to look beyond sailing time and evaluate the complete logistics chain, including connectivity before and after the ocean leg.

The Road Ahead

China’s move toward regular seasonal services, South Korea’s trial voyage and India’s planned pilot demonstrate that the Northern Sea Route is gradually moving from a future concept toward a route being tested for real-world trade.

If reliability, infrastructure and commercial viability improve, the Arctic could eventually become an additional Asia-Europe shipping corridor.
